New Trademob SDK for iOS 6 available – now integrating Apple Advertising Identifier

As we’re sure you’re well aware, iOS 6 is now available and the new version includes several new developments and updates. Among these is Apple’s new Advertising Identifier. The new ID comes as a replacement for the recently deprecated UDID, which was phased out of mobile apps for iOS due to privacy concerns. So Trademob have developed a new SDK which integrates fingerprint tracking and the new Identifier. Read on for more information about the new ID.

What does the new Advertising Identifier mean for app advertisers?
We are pleased to say that Apple are definitely moving in the right direction here, because it is thought that with their new Identifier, they will address privacy concerns much better than with the UDID. Under “Settings – General – About – Advertising”, users will be able to choose the option “Limit Ad Tracking” which forbids advertisers to run any kind of targeted ads. More good news for all privacy defenders: by erasing the device, users should be able to delete their unique identifier for good, similar to cookies that can be deleted by emptying the cache. The device will then be given a completely new Advertising Identifier which has no relation to the old Advertising Identifier.

Even though the ecosystem managed to come up with up to 4 different names for the new ID already (IDFA, IDA, IFA, Advertsing Identifier), we think that it has the potential to become the standard that was sought after for quite some time – not only for tracking but to allow many other useful applications and services to emerge.

Are there any drawbacks of the Apple Advertising Identifier?
The problem with passing IDs is the constant need to set up and maintain technical integrations with a myriad of partners in the ecosystem. For many publishers that are not part of big networks this is a considerable overhead and thanks to the “mobile cookie gap” web traffic is out of picture as well. However, this is no problem for all Trademob partners – our fingerprinting-technology enables tracking of all traffic sources, including web, without any setup process required and is privacy compatible by nature because it “forgets” users over time and honors do-not-track and other initiatives.
